Ep. 1

Thank you so much for stopping by! Welcome to my blog series, Questions of the Heart. Every Thursday you can look forward to another episode. If all goes well, we’ll bring you season 2. But for now, let’s just focus on season 1. Share away! Repost!

Okay…. let’s get into the story:

QUESTIONS OF THE HEART

“Well,  Jackie, you just need to sign here and here,”  Attorney Grayson James said as he slid the divorce documents across the shiny, cherry wood executive table.

I twisted the pen in my right hand as I reached for the papers. Who would have thought, after fifteen years of marriage, I’d be here – getting divorced. And to top it off, I’m not only sitting across from my now ex-husband, Anthony McKaplyn, Attorney at Law, but we’re in his law office. To say our divorce was emotionally challenged or legally complex would have been a complete over exaggeration. It was like we were selling a car and signing over the title.

I signed my name in both spots and slid the paper back over to Grayson, who passed it over to Anthony to sign. Typically, Anthony would be laughing, smiling and striking up conversation. Not today. He was putting on a show, trying to be the somber and caring ex that makes sure everyone sees him out to be this amazing man taking care of his ex-wife and all. I don’t need him to take care of me by the way, but you get the point. You probably even know someone exactly like my dear Anthony. He was always so good at putting on a show in public…. so good! Let’s give him props for that.

After Anthony signed his name, Grayson shuffled his papers together and glanced at both of us. “This has been the easiest divorce of all my thirty-five years in law.”

I grinned at Anthony as he nodded to Grayson. Oh dear Grayson, you have no idea do you? I thought to myself. Anthony had everyone fooled.

“Grayson, it was a pleasure, as always,” he extended his hand and stood from his seat.

I followed suit, shaking Grayson’s hand and standing. I couldn’t help but smile as I pushed the chair back under the table. I was single!! I was no longer Mrs. McKaplyn! This day had finally come! I swung my black Gucci bag over my right shoulder and picked up my cell phone. I was nervously excited and poor Anthony didn’t even know what was about to hit him…. and hard!

We walked out of the office into the waiting area. Another Attorney from the firm was in the lobby saying goodbye to his client. I knew I shouldn’t do what I was about to do. But I waited MONTHS to do this! I dreamed of this very moment over and over, rehearsing it at night or at Yoga. This was it! This was show time!

I can be very lady-like. In fact, all these years I had never liked confrontation and avoided it every chance I could. I put up with a lot and ignored even more. But this was the end of a chapter I was eager to say goodbye to. And since I just turned the big 4-0, I was eager to close out the chapter with a bang. Besides, any woman in my shoes would have done the exact same thing.

Grayson shook our hands again, thanking us and wishing us well. I wasn’t expecting an audience but what the hell. I shook Anthony’s hand, wished him well and walked on past the receptionist. I grinned at her.

“Hi Mrs. McKaplyn,” she cheerfully said. “Would you like to make another …”

I cut her off with my words …. Okay, I may have put in a more concerted effort to make sure everyone in the waiting room heard. But this was my moment to shine.

“I’m no longer Mrs. McKaplyn. Oh and by the way, he’s all yours now Cassidy,” I winked.

I’m not sure what was more pleasureful, the immediate silence or the look of sheer terror on Anthony and Cassidy’s faces.

I wasn’t done. I had more to say.

I turned around briefly before reaching for the door and again loud enough for the entire waiting room to hear I said, “Oh! And congratulations on the pregnancy! I’m excited for both of you! You’re going to make such GREAT parents!”

I winked at both of them and headed on out the door.

There, take that! Chapter closed!

I walked to my white Mercedes G-Wagon and cheerfully got inside. I really wanted to be a fly on the wall inside that waiting room. I really did. I also wanted to know what was running through Anthony and Cassidy’s minds. But then again, who cares. I said my peace. I’m on to my new life and I couldn’t be more excited!

I pulled out of my parking space and headed out of the town I had called home for the last sixteen years. At the time, I thought it was going to be my last time seeing the city limit sign for Marysville, MT.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.
